GILFORD & DISTRICT HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

Convention in Barrie - August 13 and 14, 2010

The convention of 2010 was supported and hosted by the societies of District 16: Alliston, Angus, Barrie, Beeton, Bond Head, Brentwood, Coldwater, Collingwood, Creemore, Elmvale, Gilford, Midland, Oro-Medonte, Orillia, Painswick, Penetanguishene, Stayner and Tottenham Horticultural Societies.

The theme for the 104nd Ontario Horticultural Association's Convention was 'Everything Old Is New Again' and the convention symbol, the Gingo leaf was an apt symbol for this renaissance convention.

Have a look at the pictures below from the convention and judge for yourself how much fun we had! Perhaps you will join us at the next convention that is to be held in Sudbury in July 2011.

The first thing to do at a convention is to check how you have fared in the competitions you have entered and our Kathryn Bury did extremely well with her painting: 'Powers of Water' taking First place and Best in Show, Second place for 'Bounties of Nature' and HM for 'Wonders of Leaves'.

Cathy Reid took First place for 'Bounties of nature'.

Mona Rea entered her design for 'Gateway to the North' into the flower show competition. She did not place - but you have to admit it is a clever design.

Jenni Murrell entered her design for 'Down By The Bay', a waterviewing or underwater design, she didn't place either - but here it is.

Marilyn Elliott, shown here with Mona Rea and Eveline Teras, put specimens into the show and came out with 2 first places, 2 second places and 4 third places.

Debbie Ryan was one of the vendors at the convention and she did well with her jewellery and clothes. She had even come up with a special bracelet for the convention.

This design is called 'The Sky's The Limit', and it won fist place and 'Best in Show'.

This design is called 'Farmer's Market, and it won first place and 'Judge's Choice'.

This design is from the 'Everything Old Is New Again' category. Clever, eh!

This design is from the 'Barrie's Bounty' category. I love the diagonal aspect of it.

Here are two more design in the 'Farmer's Market' category

Two more designs from the 'Down By The Bay' category. The one on the left actually won first place.

and I just loved these two design from the 'Down By The Bay' category.

These two designs are from the 'Pixie Pollinators (Fresh Miniature) category.

Letty Barolet (Award winning designer and flower show judge) did a seminar on Table Designs: 'Everything Old Is New Again' - Travel through time with the demonstration of several floral designs to discover how the artistry and techniques for floral arranging have remained consistant.

The above design and the one to left were demonstrated for us. Very easy to do but very attractive.

This particular design is called 'pave'
